Daily Devotional: He can do everything He says

Genesis 18:9-15

9 "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him.
"There, in the tent," he said.

10 Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son."
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?"

13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."

15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh."
But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

Sarah laughed. It’s not so funny when you think about it, She didn’t laugh at something she thought was “ha-ha” funny. she laughed at something she thought was “how-ridiculous” funny. She laughed because she didn’t believe God was capable of fulfilling the promise He had just made .

Her laughter was tinged with  more than a little bitterness too. Notice the sarcasm in her words: “After I have grown old, shall I have [this] pleasure my lord [Abraham] being old also?” [Genesis 18:12 NKJV]. God had promised to fulfill Sarah’s most treasured dream. And instead of rejoicing and believing, Sarah laughed.

ManuscriptureMedium004While it’s pretty easy from this end of the timeline to judge Sarah harshly for her imprudent reaction, God didn’t. That’s right. God didn’t reject Sarah and didn’t withdraw HIs promise. Until she lied and said she hadn’t laughed, He didn’t even reprimand her. He just repeated His promise, adding one rhetorical question that asks it all: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” [Genesis 18:14 NJKV]. Sarah’s only possible answer? “No…”

Is there anything to hard for the Lord? Can He really accomplish anything He pleases? Cure the sick parent? Return the prodigal child? Heal the scarred emotions? Open infertile wombs? If Sarah were to arrive today to speak to personally, she would about her assurance along with her laughter: “Yes! He ca do anything He says He can do! Believe it!”
