~37Jesus replied: " ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.~
Everything in Scripture hinges on these two commands about loving God and our neighbor. Our God loves, and he wants to be loved in return. Moreover, he wants us to be known by our love for one another and for the world. This desire for love is supreme evidence that God is a personal God.
In John 13:34, Jesus holds himself up as the model of perfect love and commands his disciples to love one another in that same sacrificial way.
Love is more than a feeling and more than a choice. It’s a recognition of the value of someone. When a relationship is valuable to us, we seek it out, we protect it, we cultivate if and don’t want to lose it. God wants us to value him, to love him above all else. But he also wants us to love those whom he loves, the people he fashioned in his own image.
What do you value most in life? Is God at the top of your list?
