~Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.~
Danny knew that God wanted him to walk away. What started out as innocent fun with teenage friends had escalated into senseless acts of destruction. He could have left when things began getting out of hand, but he didn’t want his friends to think he wasn’t cool. So he stayed and participated.
In this situation, Danny was a slave to his need for approval. In spite of what God told him, he chose to please someone else. Author Joy Dawson defines this fear of other people as “being more impressed with man’s reaction than with God’s reaction.” This fear can cause us to compromise our convictions and keep us from saying, “no” to our peers or to those in authority. It also keeps us from saying “yes” to God and stepping out in faith.
We do well to keep God in focus and to fear his displeasure more than any human person’s. Resist responding to anything but the Spirit of God.
