1 An oracle is within my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God
before his eyes.
2 For in his own eyes he flatters himself
too much to detect or hate his sin.
3 The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful;
he has ceased to be wise and to do good.
Why do so many choose to believe God doesn’t exist? Because we realize that if we acknowledge the existence of the God of the Bible, we have to obey him. But if we say there is no God—that we are here merely by chance—we can deceive ourselves into thinking we can live as we please. The psalmist says we flatter ourselves so much we don’t even recognize depraved behavior as sin. The apostle Paul goes even further, declaring that when we live to gratify our lusts, we exchange “the truth of God for a lie” [Romans 1:25].
Romans 1 shows the downward progression of our lives without God: We suppress the truth; we embrace a lie; we replace love for God with a love for created things; then we experience the consequences of our sin. This deterioration multiplies as we involve broken relationships with God, ourselves and others, in our families and all of society.
Check in with God and ask him to expose any lies you may have believed. Choose to turn back to the truth.
